Australian cricketer David Warner has broken his silence on the shock cheating scandal which has engulfed the sport.
The disgraced batsman, who has been stood down as vice captain for his role in the ball-tampering fiasco published a statement to his Instagram page on Thursday.
‘To cricket fans in Australia and all over the world: I am currently on my way back to Sydney,’ Warner wrote.
‘Mistakes have been made which have damaged cricket.
‘I apologise for my part and take responsibility for it.
‘I understand the distress this has caused the sport and its fans.
‘It’s a stain on the game we all love and I have loved since I was a boy.
‘I need to take a deep breath and spend time with my family, friends and trusted advisers,’ Warner concluded.
‘You will hear from me in a few days.’
Warner was labelled the ringleader of the scandal following the investigation into how a plot took shape during the lunch break on day three of the Third Test.
‘He (Warner) was the instigator,’ cricket veteran Jim Maxwell told ABC Radio.
“He was sitting in the dressing room with Bancroft and they came up with this ruse.
‘As I understand it, Steve [Smith] looked over to them and said, ‘What are you blokes up to? Oh, I don’t want to know’. He went out onto the field and he probably should have been more vigilant, as I said.’
