Scenes out a living nightmare have emerged this afternoon, after a man allegedly set himself on fire during an apparent attack on a suburban Melbourne bank – leaving 27 people injured, six of them with life threatening injuries.
Witnesses say that a man allegedly doused himself in an accelerant before running into the Springvale Commonwealth Bank branch at 11:30AM.
Scenes of chaos and sheer terror followed as patrons and staff attempted to escape in the inferno – the horrifying scenes made worse when a number of the ATM machines exploded.
‘The man went inside the foyer area and soon after he was engulfed in flames,’ says witness Dorothy Scott. ‘[I heard] explosions from the ATM inside the branch.
‘Everyone was concerned and in shock.’
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.
