A five-year-old boy has been left fighting for his life after he was flung from a carnival ride on the Mornington Peninsula over the long weekend.

The child suffered serious head and foot injuries when he fell from the Cha Cha ride at the Rye Easter carnival just after 5pm on Easter Monday.

He was flown to the Royal Children’s hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A witness told the Herald Sun that he saw the boy’s mother looking “really upset” as paramedics rushed to the scene.

“I was about 30 metres away from her and I could see she was holding her hands on her head and looked so distraught… she was really upset,” Sean Lynch said.

“It was so awful to see. I have a kid myself and the thought it could have been mine is shocking.”

“I just hope the young fella pulls through,” Mr Lynch added.

WorkSafe is currently investigating claims that the boy may have been on the ride after the show had been closed to the public.

“Initial inquiries indicate that the ride may have been used by carnival workers and their families after the carnival had closed,” WorkSafe said in a statement.

“Inquiries will focus on a number of issues, in particular the height requirements for riders, to determine if all safety procedures had been followed.”

Back in 2011 a 13-year-old girl was injured on the Cha Cha ride at Lilydale.

After being thrown from the ride, she was left with a broken wrist and a deep gash and nerve damage to her head.

At the time, WorkSafe refrained from taking action over the incident, explaining that they were unable to “prosecute safety breaches in every case.”
