It’s every parent’s worst nightmare – receiving news of the most shocking kind about their child. And for Marilyn (Emily Symons) and John (Shane Withington), their world suddenly stops when they hear there’s been an explosion at Jett’s (Will McDonald) army base in Kabul.
Unable to reach their son, the distraught couple can only wait and pray. But while John tries to comfort his wife, Marilyn is inconsolable. “Marilyn was worried from dayone about Jett being shipped off to Afghanistan,” says Emily. “She couldn’t understand why he had to go when he had only just graduated from military school, but this was his dream and she couldn’t stand in the way of that.
John has a navy background, so he was always more accepting of Jett going to Afghanistan. But Marilyn had a premonition that something terrible was going to happen to Jett.”
Finally, an army officer arrives on the couple’s doorstep – and the news he delivers is anything but good. Jett has been critically injured and flown to Germany for urgent treatment.
