Barbara Bush, the wife of former US President George W Bush, has passed away at the age of 91.
An official statement confirming the news was made by her husband George W Bush Senior’s office.
The former First Lady was the wife and mother of two presidents and the grandmother of 17 children.
She and George were married for 73 years.
Her son George W. served as president from 2001 to 2009, while one of her other sons Jeb was elected governor of Florida.
Twitter has flooded with tributes to the former First Lady.
Bush’s health had been deteriorating after multiple hospitalised in 2017 – suffering from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
During her life, she worked on multiple projects but her most treasured achievement was founding the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy with a goal of improving the lives of disadvantaged Americans by encouraging literacy among parents and their children.
