Australian Ninja Warrior has come under a drugs cloud, after it was revealed that no contestants were tested for steroids or performance-enhancing substances prior to competing.
The doping scandal has come to light after one contestant – who refused to reveal their identity – went public with their belief that competitors should’ve been tested.
While producers admit no drug testing was done, they claim they did carry out a ‘thorough background check’ on competitors.
But that’s not enough for some critics.
‘We’ve seen some of the biggest names in sports, stars you’d never think were taking performance-enhancing drugs, get caught out,’ one tells New Idea.
‘They weren’t found guilty from background checks – you have to do proper testing.
‘I think it’s a little naive of producers to not do testing in this day and age. While there’s absolutely nothing to suggest the competitors are taking any banned substances, everyone should be competing with a mantra of full transparency. Now everyone will wonder “Are they on steroids?” when they see someone muscly on their screens – which is unfair on everybody.’
Viewers were also up in arms over the revelation, taking to Twitter to vent their disbelief.
