Casey Anthony, the Florida woman at the centre of a 2011 murder investigation involving her daughter, has spoken out about the case for the first time since she was acquitted of the charges six years ago.
The 30-year-old still maintains she doesn’t know what happened to two-year-old Caylee, who disappeared in 2008 and was missing for a month before police were even contacted.
“I’m still not even certain as I stand here today about what happened,” Anthony told the Associated Press.
The toddler’s remains were found months later in the woods not far from Anthony’s home but authorities were unable to determine a cause of death.
Prosecutors claimed that the then 22-year-old had dumped the body and tried to resume her regular life.
After she was arrested, Anthony became the focus of a month-and-a-half long trial.
She was eventually found not guilty of aggravated manslaughter, aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder, but served three years in prison after being convicted on four counts of lying to police.
“Even if I would’ve told them everything that I told to the psychologist, I hate to say this but I firmly believe I would have been in the same place,” she admitted.
“Because cops believe other cops. Cops tend to victimise the victims. I understand now… I see why I was treated the way I was even had I been completely truthful.”
Two of the charges were later dropped, but the case remained the focus of a media frenzy that led to Anthony being dubbed as ‘the most hated mum in America.’
“Based off what was in the media, I understand the reasons people feel about me,” she said.
“I understand why people have the opinions that they do.”
When quizzed about the many theories surrounding Caylee’s suspicious death, Anthony said: “Everyone has their theories; I don’t know. As I stand here today I can’t tell you one way or another,” she said.
“The last time I saw my daughter I believed she was alive and was going to be OK, and that’s what was told to me.’
Reflecting on what Caylee would be like if she was still alive today, Anthony revealed the 12-year-old would be a “total badass.”
“I’d like to think she would be listening to classic rock and playing sports and not taking s*** from anybody.”
But despite being aware that many still view her negatively, she told the Associated Press that she leads a normal existence.
“I don’t give a s*** about what anyone thinks about me, I never will,” she said.
“I’m okay with myself, I sleep pretty good at night.”
