According to experts, a simple safety mechanism ‘costing only a couple of hundred dollars’ could have saved the lives of four people killed on a Dreamworld ride.
David Eager, an associate professor of engineering at UTS told the Sydney Morning Herald it was likely the Thunder River Rapids ride had a faulty limit switch – a sensor device that keeps distance between rafts.
He said a new limit switch would have only cost the Gold Coast theme park a couple of hundred dollars.
Mr Eager went on to say a malfunctioning limit switch could have combined with other ‘undetected’ problems and human error to cause the raft to flip.
Meanwhile, reports are suggesting that Dreamworld’s management team could face lengthy jail sentences if they are found to be negligent in the theme park tragedy that killed four people,
According to 7 News, Ardent Leisure, which owns Dreamworld could face criminal and civil action – meaning, if prosecuted the corporation faces maximum penalties of a $3 million fine and directors could be jailed for up to five years.
