According to reports, Ebony Goodchild, 12, and Kieran Low, 10 were miraculously ejected from the ride, allowing them to scramble to safety. The Courier Mail today reports that little Ebony was ‘thrown clear’, while her mother Kate was unable to get free – reportedly dying ‘almost instantly’. Similarly, Kieran was also thrown out of harm’s way, while his devoted mother Cindy was not so fortunate, perishing in the disaster.

Kate’s husband David – who reportedly witnessed the horrific scene at close quarters – is understandably deeply traumatised. His father Graham told the paper that his son has not spoken in detail about the unimaginable horrors he witnessed.

‘They haven’t even told us completely what happened but I know that tonight there are two very traumatised children coming back home,’ he said.

Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd said in a media conference that he had watched CCTV footage.

‘I have seen CCTV footage. It seems from what I’ve seen it’s almost a miracle anyone came out of it,’ he said.

‘If we’re going to be thankful for anything, I’m thankful for that.

‘Two of those [rafts] have come together and as a result one has flipped backwards and it has caught and tossed some of the people that were on the ride backwards on the conveyor belt.

‘They [the children] were thrown at one part from the ride and then managed to extricate themselves.’
