Cardinal George Pell – Australia’s most senior Catholic cleric – will stand trial on multiple historical sex offences.
After he arrived at court in Melbourne, surrounded by police, Cardinal Pell was told by magistrate Belinda Wallington that there was enough evidence to commit him to stand trial.

However, the most serious of the charges against the 76-year-old were struck out.
Cardinal Pell strenuously denies the allegations against him and pleaded not guilty.
The cardinal will appear at the County Court tomorrow when a date for a trial may be set.
The court heard he has handed in his passport and is unable to leave Australia as a condition of his bail.
