97-year-old twin sisters Jean Haley and Martha Williams died on the same day after they both suffered falls and caught hypothermia.
According to The Boston Globe, Haley and Williams met their younger sister for dinner on March 3, before heading back to Haley’s home in Barrington, Illinois.
But the twins were both found unresponsive the next morning by neighbours after falling outside the house. They were taken to a local hospital via ambulance where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Officials believe Williams – who was found in the driveway – had slipped getting into her car, and Haley – who was found nearby in the garage – may have tripped on a rug while she tried to call for help.
Authorities say that the bitter cold temperatures which dropped to (-11C) overnight contributed to their deaths, but autopsy results are still pending.
Hayley’s son John has remembered the sisters as “best friends always,” and told Time how the pair had been inseparable their entire lives.
“Twins have something special,” he said. “The way we look at it too, if one of them had gone before the other one, they would have been miserable.”
“It’s kind of beautiful in a way,” he added.
“They came into life together they died together. It was kind of a comforting feeling to know they were still together.”
“That’s the way they came in and that’s the way they went out.”
