A Perth boy who was born with part of his brain outside his skull has made an incredible recovery after risky surgery.

Jayden Mayo’s mother Thembe was just 21 weeks pregnant when doctors discovered a massive growth, known as nasal encephalocele, protruding from a hole between his eyes.

Warned that their little boy might not survive, Theme and her husband, Sipho were advised to terminate.

‘It was confronting. We were scared. We were shattered. Lots of tears,”

‘In their words, he wasn’t going to be human.’

But the brave couple decided to give their little boy a chance,  saying they would ‘accept him however he was going to turn out.’

While doctors had never seen a growth so big, Jayden underwent six-hour surgery at one week old to correct the problem.

The risky surgery was successful and now Jayden is only expected to need plastic surgery on his nose in the future.

The family have now started a charity, Face Up, to help children like Jayden who look different to others.
