An up-and-coming Australian designer is turning IKEA flatpacks into stylish statement pieces with an exciting new range of adhesive fretwork. The best part? It’s all available for under $10!

The idea being the metal, mirror-finish and ready-to-paint overlay panels are custom designed to fit IKEA’s bestselling MALM and Kallax ranges, with a simple ‘peel and stick’ process. No tools are required because each piece is pre-cut to size and backed with adhesive.

Kylie Hughes, Principal Designer at Stylkea, the innovative company responsible for the popular new IKEA hack, believes Australians are now much more interested in being co-creators in the design process.

‘We all want to live in beautiful, inspired spaces and our aim at Stylkea is to give people an easy way to customise their favourite IKEA pieces to get a luxury look for less,’ Kylie explains.

As for how she came up with the idea, Hughes said, ‘I couldn’t afford the price tag on designer furniture so I kept going back to IKEA for inspiration. But, while I love IKEA, I didn’t want our home looking like a clone of their catalogue,’ Kylie said.

‘With the high price of housing and cost of living being what it is, people are focused on making their money go further. They also want to live more sustainably by upscaling or redesigning what they already have. I like the idea that Stylekea is part of the movement,’ she added.

Kylie is now designing a new range of fretwork for IKEA’s Besta series.

The new range will be available in November.
