After 31 years popular Aussie soap Neighbours could soon be disappearing from British TV screens.
Sources say contract talks between the producers and Channel 5 are currently in “jeopardy,” with Freemantle media allegedly failing to negotiate a deal for the show.
“The renegotiation of the Neighbours Channel 5 deal has become very fraught and is in jeopardy,” an insider told The Sunday People.
The Sun suggests that this sudden uncertainty over the future of the series follows the arrival of new management at the station.
“The failure to reach a deal is being blamed on Channel 5’s new American owners Viacom for refusing to sign off on the figures and not understanding the cultural importance of the show in the UK,” the source continues.
“Neighbours has become a British TV favourite and it would be a sad day if it were to go.”
There are concerns that axing the show in the UK could make it harder for local Aussie talent to go on to worldwide fame.
