My Kitchen Rules superfans Lisa and John couldn’t believe their luck when they were picked for the 10th anniversary season of the hit cooking show.
However, the mother-and-son team’s dreams came to a crashing halt three weeks out from filming, when John broke his arm.
“It was the day after the producer came over and filmed our backstory,” Lisa, 55, tells New Idea.
“He was playing his last game of football, came down on his arm, it hurt a bit but he didn’t worry about it. A week later he couldn’t move his arm properly. He went off and had an X-ray and they said he’d broken some little bone and if he didn’t get a pin put in it that it might die and then he would never be able to use his arm properly.”
So the 29-year-old underwent surgery just three weeks before the show, and unbeknown to Lisa, the duo’s hopes of competing were nearly over.
“John never lies to me but he told me a porkie,” she says. “He said the surgeon said it’d be OK. It was only after it was all better and fixed that he told me the surgeon actually recommended he not go on the show.
“The little bugger! There was an opportunity for us to pull out three weeks before and we were both s---ting ourselves basically. John was giving up a lot. He didn’t know how much time he would need to take off work and he and his wife Chloe – they’re a young couple – they can’t really afford to take that time off but he did it.”
However, Lisa reveals John was adamant the pair not withdraw despite him needing to wear a cast for the first three weeks of the competition, including during their own Instant Restaurant.
“It meant that he couldn’t lift really heavy pots and he couldn’t chop in certain ways,” Lisa says.
“He could sort of move his wrist around but he couldn’t move it to the full extent.”
What effect will John’s arm have on the adorable team? Can Lisa carry the team’s load while John recovers?
