They both held neat leather clutches. The women, now 32 years old and successful fashion designers in their own right, had hinted beforehand they would arrive wearing unusual outfits.
“We’re going to surprise everyone," Mary-Kate told The Hollywood Reporter of her Met Gala look ahead of the ball.
“We always do our own thing anyway," Ashley added.
And they did not disappoint. The striking leather ensembles were deeply romantic, stylish and most importantly flattering. They were also memorable - and for all the right reasons. The same can be said for the womens' amazingly perfect locks.
Their golden strands were worn loose and long with the perfect amount of beach-style curl. The wonderful thing about this sweet slightly Boho style is that it is dead easy to do.
In fact, you can create curls like this simply by doing the following: wash hair and apply a little leave-in conditioner or oil and then, when it's almost dry, separate into four to six sections. Take each section and twirl from root to end and then, twist into a bun. Pin with a Bobby Pin and then, blow-dry on a low heat.
Loosen and flip head over. Run your fingers through - spritz with a light hair spray and you're good to go.
The other bonus to this hair style? The women always rock their hair this way making it a signature look.
"A signature style gives you individuality - people associate that style with you and you are setting the trend - not the other way around," says Mary Centofanti, hair director and CEO of Davroe.
"It's no longer about following a specific trend, but being a style icon."
All you need to do is work out which look suits your hair and your features and then start rocking it. Oh and snag yourself an invite to the Met Gala 2020.
