Following a busy couple of months, it should have been a time for Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik to finally relax, unwind and enjoy some quality time
in each other’s company.
However, according to Danish magazine Her & Nu, the ageing Danish monarch barely spent any time with her husband during her annual European holiday, sparking speculation that all is not well in their 50-year marriage.
‘Margrethe and Henrik haven’t been happy for a long time,’ spills a royal insider.
‘They’re on vacation together but aren’t spending any time together. They even sleep in separate quarters, as they do at home. It’s no secret their marriage is in trouble.’
Meanwhile, Margrethe, 76, and Henrik are living increasingly separate lives.
Princess Mary and Prince Frederik have been placed in charge for the three weeks the senior royals are away – officially making them acting King and Queen of Denmark.
There have long been whispers that the prince’s parents have been on the rocks for some time. When Fred’s 82-year-old father suspiciously changed his title from Prince Consort Henrik to plain Prince Henrik last year and stepped down from royal duties, insiders speculated that he was slowly but surely being pushed out by Margarethe.
‘Last year, he retired from royal duties and renounced his official title as Prince Consort. He’s all but withdrawn from being her partner in every sense of the word,’ reveals the insider.
It certainly marks a change of heart for Henrik, who previously revealed how much he wanted to be king.
‘I have always said that I should be a partner, but I am not considered as a partner because I’m not on the same level as my wife, which is completely incomprehensible.
‘All the queens in the history of the world have made their husbands King Consort. Why
should I be under my wife? I don’t accept it! I will never accept it,’ he told Dutch reporters in 2015.
It’s no secret that Henrik hasn’t been happy for some time. Shortly after he announced he
was retiring from royal duties, the Queen attended a reception for the nation’s diplomatic corps solo, with many suggesting grumpy Henrik had simply refused to go.
And in 2015, Henrik famously feigned illness in order to get out of his wife’s birthday celebrations – before being spotted soon after in apparent good health on holiday with friends in Venice.
So it comes as no surprise that Margarethe may even take away her husband’s title of prince completely, in the face of their strained relationship.
And with such upheaval rocking the Danish palace, it looks like Mary and Fred’s temporary roles could become permanent.
Stunning Mary certainly looked the part as she welcomed Iceland’s president in Copenhagen recently – an event that New Idea exclusively revealed to be a ‘test run’ for her imminent coronation.
‘Already, with Margrethe and Henrik away trying to fix their problems, Fred and Mary have had to step up,’ says the source.
‘It might only be for three weeks, but there’s always a possibility that Margrethe will never return to the throne. The fact they don’t seem to be doing much to resolve their problems is not encouraging at all.’
