Good sport Mark Beretta is sometimes amazed he’s survived to celebrate his 50th.
There was the time angry AFL legend Gary Ablett Sr stormed onto location, mad as hell, after Mark – somewhat prematurely – announced the Geelong great’s retirement live on air. And then there was the day he tee’d off golfing icon Jack Nicklaus by asking if he was proud of his US team – which had just crashed to defeat in the Presidents Cup.
I’m probably lucky to be alive,’ laughs the affable Sunrise sports presenter, who marks his half-century milestone on June 16. ‘Sometimes things go really bad and you do have those cringy moments.
‘But I probably got off pretty lightly with Ablett... It could have been a lot worse. He gave me the biggest spray I’ve ever received, and I felt sick. Coming from Geelong, he was probably my greatest sporting hero.
You name it and all-rounder Mark has probably been there, done that. A 10-times Australian water-ski champion, he also has an engineering degree, serves on the board of cancer charity Tour de Cure – he just helped raise almost $6 million with a 10-day cycle ride from Brisbane to Sydney – and even performed on Dancing With The Stars.
