Fabric care expert Mary Marlowe Leverette says our sheets are actually crawling with disgusting bodily fluids, and says we should be washing them at least once a week to keep the nasties at bay.

‘During sleep, we continue to perspire, and body oils and soil are released. It is possible to find saliva, urine, genital fluids, and fecal matter in the fibers,’ Mary tells ATTN.

‘If the (sheets) are not washed regularly, and the occupant has scratches or wounds, they can be come infected. Athlete’s foot and other fungi can be transferred from fabrics.’

If that’s not bad enough, Mary says if our sheets are not washed regularly, you risk infecting your mattress, too!

A 2014 poll revealed one in 10 of us change our sheets once a month, while only a third change their sheets weekly.

So if that ‘fresh sheets’ feeling isn’t enough to entice you to wash your linen, surely the thought of that lurking fecal matter will do the trick!
