The world is now seemingly divided into two opposing halves – lovers and haters of Pokémon GO – a wildly popular app that allows users to pursue the franchise’s characters in real-life locations, via their phones.
Not everyone sees the game as fun – with residents of an inner Sydney apartment block reportedly pelting users with water balloons, after hundreds gathered outside the building to enjoy the ‘pokéstops’ located there. Noise complaints at all hours sparked calls to police, and residents of the Rhodes building say they have had enough.
But in other parts of the world, the frenzy has become more than just an inconvenience, with several historically sensitive sites forced to issue requests to users to not indulge in the game. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Poland’s notorious holocaust site Auschwitz are requiring visitors to stop using the app while in attendance.
‘Allowing such games to be active on the site of Auschwitz Memorial is disrespectful to the memory of the victims of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp on many levels,’ spokesperson Pawel Sawicki told the New York Times.
