Kmart mum’s colourful rainbow hack

How one mum transformed a $45 Kmart bench.

Next time you want to add a pop of colour to your home, take inspiration from DIY enthusiast Brandi Love.

The Toowoomba mother of three created a rainbow mudroom for her children’s playroom using washi tape, a Kmart bench and a piece of pegboard from Bunnings.

“I wanted to create a fun and colourful space for the kids of their own where they could play, craft or relax,” she said.

The vibrant space features a rainbow-striped pegboard for storage and display, along with a reupholstered bench seat from Kmart.

“I follow a lot of boards on Pinterest that had pieces of furniture that made a statement and I really wanted to reinvent that in my home,” Brandi explains.

“Money was tight at that time and I had some Flybuy money banked up so I thought I’d check out Kmart. As soon as I saw the bench seat I knew exactly what I was going to do with it,” she says.

Brandi covered the $45 Kmart bench seat in a vibrant print fabric, using a staple gun to hold it in place. She used two $6 tubes of washi tape from Kmart to create the rainbow pattern on the board.

“I’m drawn to items that make people go WOW! I love colour and patterns and seeing how I can bring them all together,” she says.

The creative space was praised on the Kmart Mums Facebook page.

“What a happy space,” one mum commented.

“Love this, you’ve totally made it your own,” said another.
