Marie Kondo and her organising regime have swept the world with millions turning their homes upside down in a bid to rid themselves of clutter and spark joy along the way.
If you’re not across the Marie Kondo method (dubbed Kon Mari) it goes a little like this.
You choose a specific area of items – think clothing, paperwork or sentimental items.
Once you’ve chosen a category you gather every item that you own that falls into said category and collect it one space – Marie likes to use the bed!
Then, you go through every single piece and ask yourself, ‘Does it spark joy?’. If it doesn’t then out it must go.
This is actually a terrific technique for the entire household and especially the bathroom beauty cabinet.
And it’s pretty simple really.
“There are only two tasks involved,” says Marie herself.
“Discarding and deciding where to keep things.”
There – simple enough yes? So let’s do this. Open the bathroom cabinet and take everything out. Once you’ve done so have a close look at exactly what you have.
Are there items you don’t use? Toss them.
Are there items you use infrequently? Store them somewhere else.
Bottles and jars with only a few drops left? Consider binning those too.
Obviously cull any products that are passed their use-by dates and also, get rid of unnecessary packaging such as boxes, dishes and so on.
You may find you have items you had forgotten you ever bought in the first place.
If you love them, use them.
If they were impulse buys (green eye shadow anyone?) then you know what to do.
The other bonus is you will have a more clear idea of just what you have already and so you won’t be tempted to purchase more when you’re out and about.
Honestly … it’s hard to buy a serum when you’re too, too aware that you have 27 stashed in the bathroom – speaking about a friend. Obviously. Ahem.
You can use drawer or shelf dividers to organise beauty products that are smaller in size so they don’t get mixed up or damaged. Marie likes to use mini boxes. You can buy these at K-Mart, Target, ALDI and so on or use boxes you have in the home.
If space is in short supply, you can use an over-the-door shoe holder to store and organise items not in every day use.
You might also like to keep a small laundry basket in your bathroom. These work perfectly for random but necessary beauty bits and pieces such as loofahs, razors, large shampoo bottles and so on.
Now please excuse me – I have 27 serums to deal with.
