When we do a cleanse or detox we expect it to be hardcore and really restrictive, but I truly believe if you want long-term results then it’s more about small changes that don’t make you feel like you’re missing out on your favourite things. The following are just a few simple tips and tricks to kickstart a mini summer cleanse.

1. Start your day with lemon juice in warm water
Simply squeeze half a fresh lemon into a small glass of water, filling the glass to about a third, then have it like a shot.. The warm water coupled with the lemon juice will help to stimulate your liver, which is one of the body’s major detox organs.

2. Up your greens
Think broccoli, kale, silverbeet, spinach, asparagus… even salad mixes will do the trick. Green juices are the easiest way to do this (they’re high in fibre and nutritionally dense).

3. Have one vegetarian meal a day
In fact, having one completely veggo day a week is a great way to not only give your digestive system a break but also to cut down your meat consumption without going too extreme.

4. Drink cleansing teas
Try nettle and dandelion to support both liver and kidney detoxification. Milk thistle (St Mary’s thistle) also supports liver detoxing and is brilliant to take after a big night out for this reason.

5. Make smart food swaps
Try gluten-free alternatives for wheat, nut milk for cow’s milk, coconut sugar for white sugar, raw chocolate for the dairy-based stuff. Doing this will mean that your diet contains fewer foods that can cause inflammation, making it easier to cleanse.

6. Listen to your body.
According to Chinese medicine, different parts of your body detox at different times of night while you sleep, e.g. 11 pm–1 am is gall bladder and 1–3 am is your liver. So if you find you wake up between 1 and 3 am, it can be a sign that your liver needs a little support.

7. Stay motivated by making it easier on yourself.
Put your exercise gear out the night before so you don’t have to think about whether or not to train. Or pack your gym gear in the car so you can exercise after work if you’re an afternoon trainer.
