7 hair mistakes we all make!

A Hollywood stylist corrects the most common hair blunders

We all make mistakes, but your hair shouldn’t be one of them! LA-based stylist Lucie Doughty – who tends to A-listers such as Elizabeth Banks – recently attended Hair Expo, where she identified a few surprising hair no-nos women make…

1. Brush usage

Don’t rely on just one brush! ‘Different brushes are designed for different styling techniques,’ Lucie explains. A brush with fewer teeth and bigger air vents, such as Brushworx Rio, $21.95, is meant for loose blow-drying.

2. Drying technique

‘I never understand why so many women do the “soggy dog” – that vigorous back and forward drying movement with their towel,’ Lucie laments. ‘It’s better to just squeeze the water out.’ Try it with Manicare Supa Dry Towel, $24.99.

3. Cover-up technique

Regrowth touch-up products are lifesavers when masking greys! But Lucie cautions: ‘Too much on the roots will appear matte.’ ModelCo Hair Mascara, $14, is easy to apply with a light touch.

4. Budget stylers

When buying heat tools, Lucie advises buying adjustable ones. ‘The temperature you’d use to style fragile hair isn’t the same as thick hair.’ AbsoluteHeat EPS 25mm Titanium Hair Straightener, $129.95, and Silver Bullet Satin Hair Dryer, $89.95, get the thumbs up!

5. Excess washing

‘Hitting your hair with water and shampoo all the time is just going to strip away the oils,’ Lucie explains. ‘You’re better off reactivating the hair with a dry shampoo.’ We love Tresemme’s Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo, $10.99.

6. Strong hold products

If you’ve gone to the trouble of styling your hair, you want it to hold. Lucie says: ‘It’s a matter of getting the right hold product to suit the hair’s texture.’ Try a product you can layer, such as Toni&Guy’s Casual Flexible Hold Hairspray, $9.99.

7. Incorrect products

‘Ask a stylist to recommend a specific shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair’s needs,’ Lucie says. For overworked hair, try John Frieda’s Full Repair Strengthen + Restore Range, $15.99 each, while the Keratin Complex Colour Care range, $32.95, prevents coloured hair from fading.
