Puffy under eyes and dark circles ruin even the best of beauty looks. Alone or together, they make you look washed out and exhausted even when you're feeling fantastic.
So what to do?
You can cover the area with concealer. A cream version with a yellow-tone base is always a good option but it won't last. Or, you can have the area injected with dermal filler which (if done right) can make it look dewy and fresh. It's costly though and can go wrong - badly.
Alternatively, you can follow reality TV star Kristin Cavallari's lead and pop on a powerful mask and ease these all-too-common beauty issues.
Kristin, former cast-member of Laguna Beach and The Hills and now star of her own series Very Cavallari, has a hectic life. She heads up her own lifestyle brand and is CEO of her own company Uncommon James. She has a staff of some 70-odd people, a husband and three kids.
Woman is flat out. Accordingly she sometimes misses out on the recommended eight hours of sleep a night and her looks suffer for it. Yes - just like the rest of us - she suffers bags under her eyes and dark circles too.
But Kristin has a secret weapon and it works. Turns out she pops an under-eye mask on after her daily five am workout and keeps them on while she gets her little ones ready for school.
“My kids think I’m crazy, but oh well,” she was quoted as saying in US Weekly.
Oh well indeed. The masks work and that's all that matters! Kristin favours 111SKIN Celestial Black Diamond Eye Mask, $148 (for eight).
These flexible under-eye patches work to restore a smooth, hydrated and youthful appearance and Kristin is mad about them. And fair enough.
They contain a targeted, time-release formula loaded with retinol to stimulate cellular turnover, niacinamide to boost elasticity and fade discolouration, moisture-binding hyaluronic acid, line-smoothing argireline and antioxidant-rich wild rose hips to heal. They're not cheap however.
If you like the sound of them but prefer something a little less expensive try Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels, $46 (for eight).
These cooling trans-dermal gel patches infuse the eye area with potent doses of soothing ingredients, say their creators.
The sheet-style mask for eyes is formulated with elastin to firm and tone, hexapeptide to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles and ginkgo biloba to improve circulation. Sweet!
Even less expensive, Mecca Cosmetica Bright Eyed Hydrogel Eye Mask, $35 (for five).
This gold-flecked hydrogel mask is non-slip and is designed to provide moisture, brighten, lift and reduce the appearance of puffiness around the under-eye area. It is enriched with liquorice root extract which helps to brighten the skin and a red flower lifting complex to reduce the appearance of fine lines and puffiness. Another excellent choice.
