Speaking to The Daily Mail at the 2016 Helpmann Awards in Sydney, 62-year-old Kennerley told Kruger to 'Stay brave'.
In response to the shocking treatment Kruger has received following her comments, Kennerley said: 'This is just appalling beyond belief.’
The Australian television personality added, 'I think it's appalling - with freedom of speech - where people have an opinion and everybody else finds the need to slam someone'.
'We are living in a democratic country. We do need people to have varying opinions and it should be treated with respect so therefore everybody should have their freedom of expression.'
Also present at the awards was Kruger’s co-host David Campbell. When asked about the controversy he told The Daily Mail they are keen to put the last week behind them.
‘We're fine, we're great,' he said adding, 'We had a great show this morning.'
