Karl Stefanovic is preparing to quit Australia and follow his heart to the US in the name of love.
The popular host was last week photographed in high spirits as he marched out of the offices of high-powered Sydney legal firm Swaab Attorneys, who specialise in employment law and contract disputes.
It’s believed Karl met with lawyers to explore options around leaving breakfast show Today and becoming Channel Nine’s US bureau chief, so he can be close to his new LA-based girlfriend, 33-year-old Jasmine Yarborough.
The prospect of escaping Sydney – and the attention he’s attracted since splitting from his wife of 21 years, Cassandra Thorburn, last September – is believed to be enticing the star.
‘Karl wants [Nine’s US bureau chief] Robert Penfold’s job,’ says a Channel Nine insider. ‘He knows he would need to take a pay cut, but would love to relocate to the US as Nine’s correspondent, a similar role to one his brother Pete fulfilled.
‘He really just wants to be able to have brunch with Jasmine on a Sunday morning, and this appears to be a situation that could make his wish come true.’
Insiders are speculating that Karl has enlisted legal services to help negotiate changes to his existing Nine contract – and also help deal with red tape and visa requirements so he can work in the US.
And while friends are reportedly cautioning the 42-year-old against making any drastic moves, it seems his mind is already made up.
Karl and Jasmine have only been official for a couple of months, but that’s not stopping him,’ a friend tells New Idea.
‘He’s 100 per cent committed to the relationship and sees a future with Jasmine. And after 21 years of marriage, he’s not interested in taking things slow – he wants it all with Jasmine.
‘But he knows that long-distant relationships are hard – especially when you’re talking about the US and Australia. Jasmine is committed to her work and life in LA, so Karl decided he’d go to her.’
