“His payoff will be a late-night prime-time news show to anchor,” the source claims, which might fill a gap for the Nine Network, as it doesn’t currently have an evening news and current affairs talk show.
They also added that Karl’s short return to Today will conveniently take place two weeks before ratings start next year in mid-January 2020.
But the news will be disappointing for fans, who have been calling for Karl’s return to hosting duties on Today.
“I miss him like crazy … I just loved having him there on our screens daily,” one person commented on Twitter.
“I loved watching Karl & Co. They brought life into the morning show. It was serious when it needed to be & light hearted & funny too. So, when Karl & Co left the building I checked out & moved to Sunrise,” wrote another.
Karl’s shoe-designer wife is believed to be expecting their first child and the couple were planning for the official announcement to coincide with the news of his return.
Sources revealed that Karl – who shares three children with his ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn – was hoping to settle into the new role so he could focus on being a new dad again.
And while Karl is due to host This Time Next Year, which is expected to air soon, it looks like his future is up in the air again.
“Karl has desperately been attempting to meet with the network to understand what his future holds, so he and Jasmine can plan how life will be,” another insider adds. “But he has struggled to get a slot with the management team. There have been several cancellations for meetings scheduled and that has upset him greatly.”
