Despite juggling a full-time career, a hubby, three sons and a dog, Modern Family’s Julie Bowen manages to stay looking and feeling fit, fabulous and energised. She tells New Idea how...
Q. What were the biggest changes you noticed in your skin and body after having three children?
A. Nobody will ever see my tummy again! There is a laxity issue. Some things are better, though – I really like not having so much baby fat in my face. I feel like I have more bone structure.
Q. What is your anti-ageing secret?
A. Sunscreen! I grew up in the generation where my mum used to sit outside with a tanning foil reflector to make sure she was getting sun in every nook and cranny. That was extreme, but by the time I was a teenager, there was enough information out there for us to know we had to wear sunscreen and put it on all the time. I have very sensitive skin, though, so it took a long time for the products to catch up with people who have sensitive skin. Now, sunscreen is just in all skincare and make-up and it doesn’t irritate.
Q. What is your skincare routine?
A. I keep it simple. I cleanse then apply the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Moisturizer with SPF during the day, and do the same at night with the Night Moisturizer. It’s so gentle, and I love that the day cream has SPF. Los Angeles is like Australia – you have to wear a sunscreen every day.
Q. What is your can’t-live-without-beauty product?
A. Mascara! I don’t leave home without it. If I’m without it, I suddenly have these two little pin eyes. Mascara just makes me feel brighter. I have to say lipstick too.
Q. What has been your biggest beauty blunder?
A. OK, so the ’90s seem to be coming back in fashion and I did it all the first time – especially over-plucking my eyebrows into thin little lines. I regret it – those tiny worms on your eyes are not a good look!
