It’s no secret that calories and Christmas go hand in hand, it’s the seasons of cocktails, cakes and chocolate, after all. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that on average Aussies gain 0.8-1.5kg over the festive season.
‘Christmas is the one time of the year when our good intentions can go floating out the window and extravagance and overindulgence can take over,’ says Nicole Dynan Accredited Dietitian for The Dietitian's Association of Australia.
‘Most of us tend to over-indulge at Christmas as eating mindfully is almost impossible in the presence of large portions of delicious food, leaving a lot of us with an extra kilo or two at the end of the day.’
While there’s nothing wrong with tucking into some naughty food over the holiday season, research shows that the extra weight gained over this period is rarely lost. So, to help you avoid tipping the scales higher come January, we’ve chatted to a few women who’ve successfully shed a significant amount of weight and generously shared their tips for keeping of those Christmas kilos.
1. Kirby Smith, 27, Esperance, WA - I lost 15kgs!
How: It was actually a case of eating more that led Kirby to shake the extra kilos she was unhappy with. ‘If anything I eat more now than I did before losing the weight but I just eat food that is going to nourish my body and keep me fuller for longer.’
‘I knew I wasn’t happy in the skin that I was in and I knew that I was the only person who could change it.’
So, Kirby started exercising daily and cut out the junk, over just three months she dropped down to her goal weight. “I made sure my diet was really protein heavy and never, ever skipped a meal. Planning and meal preparation was really the biggest key for me.’’ she tells New Idea.
2. Sue Dunand, 52, Caringbah, NSW - I lost over 77kgs!
How: It was a double whammy for Sue, when her scales tipped over into the triple digits and she was diagnosed with depression at the same time. “That’s when I snapped, I decided that it was time to take control back of my life and I thought a great way to do that was through exercising and helping control the way I felt about myself, I knew I had improvements to make,’ Sue tells New Idea.
So, Sue joined Curves and over the past 2.5 years she’s managed to shed 20kg. “I’ve even managed to inspire my hubby who’s lost 18kgs along side of me. I feel like a new woman and have never felt so confident in my own skin.”
3. Christina Henderson, 31, Marrickville, NSW - I lost 23kgs!
How: Meeting the love of her life, David, after coming out of a difficult period, Christina realised she wanted to be the best she possibly could be. ‘He saw the best in me when I couldn’t see it myself and it made me feel beautiful and motivated me to get happy and healthy,’ she tells New Idea.
Through a combination of spin classes, weights and walking tied in with a high protein, low carb diet, the kilos started melting off. Within a year she’d lost 16kgs. Now in her best shape ever, Christina’s looking forward to staying healthy and keeping the weight off.
‘My next goal is to do a 7km run in 40mins and continue to maintain my weight on the countdown to marrying the love of my life at the end of December.’
4. Name: Hayley Moore, 25,Gaythorne, QLD - I lost over 35kgs!
How: Before meeting her now husband, James, Hayley’s life revolved around partying, drinking and eating unhealthy food. ‘He really inspired me to change my way of life,’ she tells New Idea.
The new couple started exercising together and eating healthily and Hayley’s lifestyle began to change. After have her weight fluctuate for the next few years and giving birth to her second child in January, Hayley was ready to slim down to her goal size. She joined the Goodlife Health Club’s 12 week challenge and by the end she’d shed 10kgs and weighed less than before she fell pregnant. ‘I love the fact that I have more energy to play with my children and that I am in control of my lifestyle.’
