Has your normally flawless skin started misbehaving? Don’t worry, it’s not uncommon. Skin specialist Jodie King from Skin Clinic @ Blyss shares her tips so you can avoid the waiting room – and the bill!
1. White Spots (Milia)
Raised white spots commonly found around
the nose, cheeks and eyelids occur when keratin becomes trapped underneath the skin.
Treatment: Using exfoliating products containing retinols and AHAs will help prevent more milia from developing.
2. Dark Patches (Hyperpigmentation)
Hyperpigmentation is caused
by excess melanin production
in the skin’s upper layers, normally as a result of sun exposure or hormones.
Treatment: Prevent it by using a quality sunscreen. In-salon and home care options range from lasers to peels and topical treatments.
3. Red Blotches
Flushing can be caused by conditions such as dermatitis and rosacea.
Treatment: See an expert for an accurate diagnosis. Dermatitis may require a mild hydrocortisone cream. If it’s rosacea, you might need in- salon laser or IPL treatments, as well as skincare products containing niacinamide.
4. Blind Pimples
These painful, deep acne lesions are the result of overproduction of sebum and clogged pores. They may appear due to hormonal changes, bacteria infection or build-up of dead skin cells.
Treatment: Don’t pick! Instead use a cleanser and spot treatment containing salicylic acid or tea tree oil to exfoliate the skin and target the inflammation.
5. Overly Sensitive Skin
Skin may suddenly become uncomfortable or itchy due to environmental conditions, allergies or
from being very dry.
Treatment: To keep skin nourished without irritating, use hydrating products free from fragrance and alcohol.
