Every celebrity under the sun seems to be adopting the Keto Diet, but how does it actually affect your mood and sleep?
New Idea speaks to health and sleep expert Olivia Arezzolo about the impact this low carb eating plan has on the body.

According to Olivia the Keto diet actually enhances your sleep.
“Academic journal Nutritional Neuroscience reports the keto diet beneficial for sleep, and in particular, it’s ability to enhance deep sleep. As a sleep specialist, this is not surprising: omega 3 fats reduce anxiety and insomnia, as supported by evidence of over 1,200 individuals across 19 clinical trials, JAMA reports,” says Olivia.
“Advances in Nutrition pinpoints poor sleep quality is associated with a high sugar, high carbohydrate diet, whereas a low carbohydrate diet, such as the keto diet, correlates with a more restful, undisturbed and restorative sleep. Translated, for quality sleep, skip the bread basket and go straight for mains – you’ll thank me in the morning,” she adds.
In relation to your mood however, Olivia says their may be short term irritability to contend with!
“The keto diet is shown to reduce anxiety, and on the flipside, a diet high in sugary carbohydrates is shown to enhance it. However, note that in the initial stages of transitioning, side effects of switching from your normal state to a ketogenic state may lead to irritability and moodiness – you’ve been warned!,” she says.
