INSTRUCTIONS

STEP ONE:

Begin by holding your knitting needle with the slip knot in your right hand. With your left hand, hold the ball end of the wool and place your thumb over the yarn. Loop the wool around your thumb and insert your wooden needle in an upwards motion at the base of your thumb. Remove your thumb and pull gently on the wool until it is snug on the needle.

STEP TWO:
Work rows 1 to 54 in seed stitch with a garter stitch edge, this means:

To seed stitch, bring the yarn to the front of your work and purl the next stitch.
Repeat this sequence until you finish the row.
When you finish, turn your work and work the stitches in the opposite stitch as they appear. This means if you see a knit stitch, purl it, and if you see a purl stitch, knit it.

STEP THREE:
To complete your garter stitch, hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand.
Hold the other needle in your right hand and insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch, with the right-hand needle crossing under the left-hand needle.
With the right hand, pass the yarn underneath and around the right-hand needle.

STEP FOUR:
Hold the yarn with your right hand and slide the left-hand needle towards the tip of the right-hand needle.
Pull up the working yarn with the tip of the right-hand needle so that the right-hand needle is on top of the left-hand needle.

STEP FIVE:
Slide the right-hand needle along the left-hand needle until the stitch is dropped from the left-hand needle. You have now made your first knit stitch.
Insert the needle into the next stitch, wrap the yarn, slide, pull the yarn through the stitch on the left-hand needle and drop the stitch.

Repeat until you’ve knitted all the stitches on the needle

STEP NINE:

Work the stitches as follows:

Purl 1, knit 1. Repeat until there are 4 stitches left and knit them

STEP 10:
To cast off all stitches, knit and slide it off the needle.

STEP 11:

Now knit the next stitch, pass the first stitch over the one you just knitted, and drop it off the needle. Repeat until there is only one stitch left on the right-hand needle.

STEP 12:

To finish, pull the last stitch and remove the needle.
With scissors cut the yarn, leaving a yarn tail a few inches long to weave in later.

Pull the yarn through the loop of the stitch and pull it tightly. You’ve now cast off all your stitches.

STEP 13:

Once you have finished knitting your project it will look like the image at the very top.

STEP 14:

To finish, make a knot and weave in the tail end of yarn about 3 inches, cut off even with the fabric. Weave in any loose ends in the same way.

DEFINITIONS:

Slip 1: insert your right-hand needle in the next stich as if you were going to purl it, slip this stitch to the right-hand needle without purling it.

Purl: Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand. Hold the other needle in your right hand. The yarn should always be in front of the right-hand needle. Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand needle from back to front, crossing the right needle in front of the left-hand needle.

Wrap the yarn around the right-hand needle from the bottom toward the top. Slide the right-hand needle back and through the gap under the stitch, pull the tip of the right needle out from under the left-hand needle and slide the stitch off the left-hand needle.
