Flight ET 302 which had only been up for a short while, crashed near the town of Bishoftu, 62 kilometres southeast of the capital Addis Ababa, the airline shared.
"It is confirmed it happened 8.44 (am)," revealed the spokesman.
The airline said in a statement said: "search and rescue operations are in progress and we have not confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties."
Shortly after the devastating crash, the Ethiopian prime minister's office sent condolences to the families of those lost in the crash via Twitter.
