Mulled wine, mince pies and more mulled wine aside, maybe the best thing about the Xmas season is the banquet of films we get to choose from. From old classics and Disney favourites to guilty pleasures and new releases, there’s usually something on offer to tickle everyone’s festive fancy.

So we’ve taken a look at the movies Netflix is adding this December to give you a shortlist of ones to look out for. Hopefully there’s something for every taste!

Netflix for Christmas pros and cons

Old faves

Nothing helps you get through the Christmas food coma like a hot drink (mulled wine!) and a good movie, especially one you don’t have to think too hard about. Watching these classics is like slipping into your favourite pjs – you know what’s coming and you know it feels good. Here are a few movies you can rely on when you need them:

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom – 1st December

(As if there wouldn’t be an Indy film at Christmas)

Love Actually – 7th December

(Your slice of British romcom this festive season)

About a Boy – 7th December

(Actually, there’s more Hugh Grant romcom goodness to fill up on this Chrissy)

American Graffiti – 7th December

(It’s 1962 and highschool graduates in California are about to head out into the big, wide world. A subte coming of age story set in a more innocent time, this is a great slice of teen culture)

Scent of a Woman – 7th December

(Al Pacino in one of his best, Oscar-winning performances. Enough said)

Guilty pleasures

The movies we cue up when no one else is watching, Cruel Intentions, Bring It On, Spice World… we’ve all got them!

The American Meme – 7th December

(A behind the scenes docu-film following Paris Hilton and other social media influencers as they try to build and keep their audiences. It’s better than it sounds!)

The Change-Up – 7th December

(Like a modern version of Tom Hanks’ ‘Big’, with Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, and wife-swapping)

One Direction: This Is Us – 23rd December

(Ssshhhhhhhh!!! Don’t. Tell. Anyone…)

Netflix for Christmas pros and cons

Doing it for the kids

Christmas is a family time and the season’s movie roster is always packed with adventure and cartoon options. These ones might just satisfy viewers of all ages.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – 1st December

(You know the story, mutated turtle warriors try to save New York City from evil. Cowabunga dude!)

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle – 7th December

(A darker take on the Jungle Book story, including big name voices like Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch and Cate Blanchett. It’s not just for kids)

The Angry Birds Movie – 22nd December

(We’ve all played it. Now find out why the birds are so angry!)

Monster Trucks – 30th December

(Lots of action in a boy-meets-creature adventure and friendship story. You’ll wonder the the time went.)

If you haven’t signed up to Netflix yet then the Christmas holidays is a perfect time to give it a try. It’s a pretty cheap monthly cost for more movies and TV shows than you could ever watch, and all you need is a decent internet connection.

However, streaming movies does eat up a bit of data, particularly when watching in high definition, so it might be best to check out how much data you’d need for Netflix.

So there you have it, your cheat sheet to Christmas at the movies. All that’s left now is to stock up on the mulled wine and get comfy on the couch.

Happy streaming!
