During the Nine upfronts on Thursday night, Andy Lee used his hosting gig to make his light-hearted argument for why he should step into the reporting top job.

“We’re both here using these hosting duties today to audition for the role of A Current Affair for next year,” Andy explained to the audience.

The conversation between the Aussie radio host and journalist Brooke Boney received a number of laughs from the audience, as he put forth a number of reasons why he should take the gig, explaining that he’s “the perfect person for this ACA role.”

Later that night, Andy told New Idea exclusively that he was “definitely” down for the new job and thought that his efforts to convince the audience “went really well!”

Whilst Andy’s humorous efforts to snatch up the in-demand gig were well received, a number of Aussie presenters are also believed to be eyeing up the position.

Many believe Today show host Karl Stefanovic is a top contender for the role, however, sources say Nine is desperate to keep him in the morning show gig.

A TV executive recently confirmed to New Idea that another notable Aussie presenter may also be a front runner: Mel Doyle.

“There’s a feeling in Nine that it would be great to replace Tracy with another female host, and Mel Doyle is perfect for it, and very much on the market,” they to New Idea

“She’s worked for Seven and Nine recently and is a great fit with the demo.

Sunrise is still rating a lot better than Today, but Karl and Ally (Langdon) have a great chemistry and the execs would prefer not to mess with that.”

TV Blackbox co-creator Rob McKnight, a former executive producer of Studio 10 revealed to New Idea that Karl has long had his eyes on Tracy’s job.

“It’s one of the best jobs in Australian television, but it’s just one of the pieces in a big puzzle,” he explained.

“If they give it to Karl, who do they get to take his job on Today, and will that person work well with Ally? It’s definitely a problem for them.”
