Step 1 Paint the wooden rod. Leave to dry, and then apply a second coat.
Step 2 Wrap foil around the tip of a skewer. Place the bead on the skewer and paint it. Place the skewer in a cup and leave to dry. Apply a second coat of paint and repeat with all of the remaining beads.
Step 3 To create the tassels, cut a 20cm piece of yarn and place it along the spine of a small hardcover book. Wrap yarn around the book 30 times, over the top of the first piece of yarn.
Step 4 Tie a double knot with the piece of yarn that is running along the spine of the book.
Step 5 Cut the yarn at the opening of the book.
Step 6 Cut a 20cm piece of yarn and tie it around the middle of the tassel. Cut the ends of the tassel so they are even. Repeat until you have 10 tassels.
Step 7 Middle hanging: For a 60cm hanging, thread a 70cm piece of yarn through the top of a tassel and knot it to secure it in place (tuck end into tassel). Thread yarn through another tassel and tie a knot so it sits 25cm above first tassel. Tie a double knot 15cm above second tassel and sit bead over it. Tie end of the yarn to middle of the rod and cut off remaining yarn. Repeat steps with remaining hangings, spacing them all 7cm apart. See box for measurements.
Third and fifth hanging:
Yarn length – 50cm.
Second tassel – 20cm above first tassel.
Bead – 15cm above
Second and sixth hanging:
Yarn length: 40cm.
Bead: 30cm above tassel.
First and last hanging:
Yarn length – 30cm.
Bead – 26cm above tassel.
Step 8 Tie a long piece of yarn to each end of the rod so you can hang it up. Using a hot glue gun, apply glue to the ends of each piece of yarn tied around the wooden rod, so they won’t fray. You can also apply glue to the inside of the beads to secure them in place.
