Rumours are circulating that David and Victoria Beckham have paid off a Geelong Cats star's $280,000 mortgage in exchange for his Scottish hotel suite with uninterrupted views of the British Open.
Speaking on Triple M earlier this week, Tom Hawkins, who plays for the same Victorian AFL team as the mystery player at the centre of the claims, said the outrageous story was “100 per cent true.”
The rumours surrounding the popular golf contest in Scotland first began on Thursday when radio host Seb Costello discussed the story.
'There's one room that everybody wants and that's the suite that has the best views of the 18th green,' Seb explained, referring to a famous room at the four-star Carnoustie Golf Hotel.
'Well, apparently, the wife of a [Geelong] Cats player organised the surprise of a lifetime. Booked the whole thing. She booked the room, flights over to Scotland and tickets to The Open. How good's that?'
However, according to the rumour David and Victoria stepped in at the last minute and made the unidentified Australian footballer - who was given the pseudonym 'Angus' during the Triple M program - an offer he couldn't refuse.
Seb continued: 'The hotel manager contacted the player and said, "I've got a question for you. How much do you have left on your mortgage?" And the player says $280,000.
'So the manager says, "We are prepared to pay you $280,000 if you give up the suite with views of the 18th green".'
The outlandish claim was later backed up by Hawkins, who called in to confirm the story.
'I got told it on Thursday [last week] and then played golf with a few mates on Saturday,' Tom said. 'And then somehow, by Monday, I'm receiving messages from different mates right across the game asking me if the story was true.'
However, a spokesperson for the Beckham’s denied the rumour stating, I have no idea where this story has come from. It's not true and very bizarre. The family are away on summer holiday and not attending the British Open.'
