A-LISTERS, royalty and even a President came under fire in a Mickey-taking opening monologue at Sunday night’s British Academy Film Awards.
Host, openly gay British entertainer Stephen Fry quipped he “hadn’t been surrounded by so many thrilling muscular bodies since last night” after a thrilling performance by Cirque du Soleil.
To laughter and applause, he even jokingly hailed the assembled guests, who include Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Hugh Grant, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Emily Blunt and Andrew Garfield, as “the most over-rated people on the planet.”
Addressing Prince William and his wife Kate he mocked the couple, remarking how it was recently claimed in a British TV documentary that the royal family is related to Cockney loudmouth Danny Dyer, an actor in the popular British soap, EastEnders.
Addressing the Duke, Stephen said: “After watching a recent episode of Who Do You Think You Are? you are still recovering from the devastating news you are related to Danny Dyer.”
Introducing Meryl Streep, he referenced her recent fallout with President Donald Trump, who said the Oscar winner was “overrated” after she took a veiled pot shot at him at the Golden Globes in America last month.
“She is one of the greatest actresses of all time and only a blithering idiot would think otherwise,” he said.
Singling out Emma Stone, Stephen said: “For La La Land she deserves special mention for pretending to like jazz!”
Then to Amy Adams, he said: “In ‘Arrival’ she plays a linguists who translates aliens who make no sense, so she can help what tonight’s winners say on the podium.”
Then to Casey Affleck, brother of Ben, who stars in Manchester by the Sea, he added: “Casey Affleck is without doubt, one of the most brilliant actors in his family.”
