He’s been a classic character of film and TV since 1966, but it seems we didn’t know much about Captain Sulu’s private life. In the new Star Trek movie, the Enterprise’s handsome helmsman will be married to a man.
While in the original series Sulu was seen to occasionally flirt with women, and in a much later film he was said to have fathered a daughter, details of the character’s home life were scant at best. But in Star Trek: Beyond, things will be much more clear.
‘I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it,’ actor John Cho told the Herald Sun. ‘Which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations.’
In the new movie Sulu is again depicted as the father of a daughter, whom he co-parents with his husband.
