TV fans have been left in a state of absolute shock after pay TV drama Wentworth aired one of the most horrific and violent scenes ever featured in an Australian drama.
The deeply traumatising scene – which featured Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson cutting the tongue out of a prisoner who had previously sexually assaulted her –left even seasoned viewers of the notoriously violent show shaken.
Delivering a line too filthy for a family website before she cut off lesbian character ‘Juicy’ Lucy Gambaro tongue, Joan wanted it known that her notorious life as a sex predator was now at an end.
A blood drenched Juicy then staggered into the exercise yard, before her severed tongue was presented to Vera Bennett as an anonymous gift.
Wentworth Executive Producer Jo Porter has defended the shocking scene, insisting it did not go too far.
‘It’s wonderful to have the freedom of creative expression on Foxtel. But it should never be done for shock value alone,’ she told news.com.au. “It shouldn’t just be because you can, it should be informed by character and the demands of the story.’
Actress Sally-Anne Upton, who plays Juicy, told the site that she was disappointed she will no longer be able to deliver her character’s signature dialogue.
‘I’d done a bit of research on tongues,’ she said of preparing for the harrowing scene. ‘I’m a nurse too, nine times out of 10 someone will die from an incident like that because the tongue is so vascular.’
It’s unknown if Lucy will survive and if the groundbreaking show will now prominently feature her speech disability in story lines.
