AFL legend Wayne Carey has shut down rumours of an alleged relationship between him and Marc Murphy’s wife Jessie Habermann.
‘I don’t even know her,’ Carey defended on sports show Talking Footy.
Carlton captain Marc Murphy was allegedly subjected to sledging about the topic over the weekend while playing against St. Kilda.
According to the Daily Mail, Murphy was taunted over Carey’s rumoured affair with Habermann, which has since been denied.
Murphy addressed their alleged relationship on social media, saying it was ‘untrue’.
‘I would like to respond to highly inappropriate social media commentary that has escalated in the past few days,’ he tweeted.
‘I want to be clear that these comments are untrue, hurtful to my wife and family and show a lack of respect to women. We would like to move on and will not be making any further comment.’
Carey said he considered putting a press release out about the subject, but decided against it.
‘There was no truth to it whatsoever so I didn’t really worry about it. But then it started to grow legs a bit more,’ he revealed.
‘Once more I just want to say I’ve actually never ever had a conversation with Marc Murphy’s wife. I don’t even know her.’
‘Just so everyone knows, I wasn’t part of any of that sledging. My name wasn’t brought up by any of the St Kilda players to Marc Murphy – that’s been confirmed by Marc and everyone,’ he added.
