Kanye West has long been vocal about his ongoing battle with mental health, and now the Famous rapper is opening up about his bipolar diagnosis and how it has affected his career and personal life with wife Kim Kardashian.
In an interview with David Letterman on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, the Yeezy designer revealed what it’s like when he has an “episode” related to his disorder and recalled being handcuffed and separated from his family as part of the treatment, Entertainment Tonight reports.
WATCH Kanye speaking about the terrifying ordeal below:
“They have this moment where they…handcuff you, they drug you, they put you on the bed, and they separate you from everyone you know.
“That’s something I am so happy that I experienced myself so I can start by changing that moment – when you are in that state, you have to have someone you trust. It is cruel and primitive to do that,” he added.
West, 41, reportedly admitted he becomes “hyper-paranoid” about everything during a bipolar episode, and feels everything is a conspiracy.
“You feel the government is putting chips in your head. You feel you’re being recorded. You feel all these things,” he said.
In April, Kim opened up about her husband’s condition in an interview with Vogue.
The KUWTK queen revealed the couple had reached a “pretty good place” with Kanye’s mental health, saying: “We can definitely feel the episodes coming, and we know how to handle them.”
In May 2018, the Stronger singer famously appeared on TMZ and declared that slavery is “a choice”, a statement West and Kardashian later clarified as being taken out of context.
Kanye confirmed he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder the following month during an interview at the listening party for his new album Ye.
“Like I said on the album, it’s not a disability, it’s a superpower,” he said at the time.
Bipolar disorder is a brain condition characterised by dramatic changes to mood and energy from soaring highs to crushing lows.
