Was Des Quilty dumped from Australian Survivor for being too old? That’s the question people are asking this morning.
The 59-year-old was the first to go on the reality show last night, despite having years of experience surviving in the bush. With most of his team members aged in their twenties and from very different worlds, the gruff breakout star – who got some people offside with his manner and by taking a back seat earlier on – found it difficult to form alliances.
‘Most people in the game are gonna underestimate me. They’re gonna think “this country boy don’t know much.” But I tell ya, I’m smarter than the average dog. My IQ’s probably higher than the number of hot dinners they’ve had,’ said Des in the show’s opening.
‘I’m born to play a villainous game. If they don’t get rid of me first, they are gonna be in trouble.’
At the first tribal council, Des nominated 26-year-old brand manager Kit. ‘I don’t like being told what to do. Only my wife does that. Good LUCK,’ he told her.
Des received five votes from his fellow contestants and was the first to be eliminated.
‘First to go… the worst possible outcome,’ he said.
He added: ‘While you’re in smooth waters now, there’s a tempest sea out there in front of ya – so be prepared.’
