Celebrity chef Darren Simpson has died after suffering a suspected heart attack.
News Corp reports that the father-of-two passed away on Thursday night in a hospital near his Byron Bay home after battling an illness related to alcohol addiction.
The Irish-born chef shot to fame with Australian audiences as a judge on My Restaurant Rules and enjoyed regular appearances on Seven’s Sunrise, Ten’s Ready, Steady Cook and The LifeStyle Channel’s The Best.
Earlier in his career he trained in some of the most acclaimed restaurants in the world, including Le Gavrouche, the River Café and Satoria, before he was headhunted to take up the role of head chef of Aqua Luna Bar in Sydney’s Circular Quay.
Simpson was also named UK’s Chef of the Year at age 21, becoming the youngest ever recipient of the prize.
Many in the food industry have taken to social media to pay tribute to their friend, with his peer Matt Moran describing him on Twitter as “one of the best.”
Simpson is survived by his wife Julie and sons Hamish, 12 and Angus, 14.
