It has emerged that Brisbane woman Sara Zelenak, 21 – who was this afternoon confirmed killed in the London Bridge terrorist atrocity – had two prior brushes with UK terror attacks.
Sara’s mother, Julie Wallace, shared a chilling detail about her daughter’s life in London. The young nanny narrowly missed two previous terror attacks in Westminster and Manchester.
Speaking to radio station 97.3fm, Ms Wallace explained how her daughter had already avoided two brushes with death.
“The one with the policeman being stabbed three months ago, she was there the day before in the exact same spot,” she said.
“She was going to go to the [Ariana Grande] concert. Everything she’s just missed.”
Before the news of her daughter’s death was confirmed, Ms Wallace told the station she felt “horror, complete horror” about her daughter’s situation.
On Saturday night, Sara was separated from her friend when the white van crashed into pedestrians on London Bridge and chaos broke out.
Her friends and family hadn’t heard from her since, and her situation remained a heartbreaking mystery until this afternoon’s tragic confirmation.
“I ran thinking she would be running with me but I looked back and she wasn’t there,” friend Pri Gonçalves recalled of that fateful night the pair were separated.
The pair had been out for dinner when they heard the crash, Pri says they walked a few steps to see what had happened when they heard people screaming.
“People started running and shouting ‘run’. At that moment I got scared and desperate so I ran,” Pri told Fairfax Media.
“Sara was with me when people started running and shouting but at that very moment we got separated.
“I thought I was going to die, it was by far the most traumatising, shocking and scariest moment of my life,” Pri recalls.
“I’m feeling terrible and scared of crowded places, [of] people and of the tube. I can’t be alone and what makes this worse is to know that Sara was with me when [she went] missing.”
Our thoughts are with all affected by this terrible crime.
