Superstar Tom Cruise has become the target of disturbing death threats in the US, related to his Scientology beliefs.
Showbiz news site TMZ reports that according to the Los Angeles Police Department, a man recently telephoned a Scientology branch, identifying himself as ‘a Muslim who likes suicide bombings.’
The caller then allegedly asked, ‘Are there any bombings I can do?’ before singing and crying, ‘Allahu Akbar, Tom Cruise!’ He then hung up.
Tom Cruise, who for decades, has been a keen member of The Church of Scientology, founded by L Ron Hubbard, has been in regular contact with police about the threats and his minders have stepped up security.
It’s not the fist time Cruise’s unwavering devotion to Scientology has caused him headaches. His allegiance to the religion was said to have contributed to his marriage break-up with Nicole Kidman and later Katie Holmes. Several years ago, he offended actress Brooke Shields after she admitted to taking medication for post-natal depression; Scientology does not approve of drugs for mental illness. Cruise later apologized to the actress.
The 54 year old star is currently in the UK, filming The Mummy co-starring Annbelle Wallis and Sofia Boutella, and is gearing up for roles in Mission Impossible 6 and Tom Gun 2.
