10 years after she starred as Roxie Hart in Chicago, Tina Arena is making her highly-anticipated return to musical theatre.
The singer-songwriter has announced she has been cast as Eva Peron in an upcoming Sydney stage production of Evita after previously turning down the opportunity.
“I have been approached to do this role on a couple of occasions,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald. “(But) I never felt emotionally ready for it.”
“I felt I had a lot of living and learning before I could get up and take on the enormity of the story and the human spirit she (Eva) possessed.”
But while the Aria award-winner is excited about her comeback, she admitted the new gig will require great commitment.
“It’s an incredibly demanding job,” she said.
“It’s a really challenging sing. I am going to have to be incredibly disciplined.
The show is set to open in September next year and will be the first Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice production to be performed at the Sydney Opera House.
It will be directed by Broadway legend and 21-time Tony Award-winner Hal Prince who is credited with the original 1978 production in the West End.
