The death of Princess Diana sparked a major falling out between Prince Charles and The Queen, according to a new royal report.
Royal biographer Penny Junor revealed to the Mail Online that Charles and the Queen initially thought Diana had merely suffered a broken arm after receiving a 1am call from the British ambassador in Paris.
However, when it became apparent that his ex-wife had tragically died, Junor states rather than coming together in tragedy, Prince Charles was left alone, calling Camilla Parker Bowles for support.
“When he rang at 3.45am with the news that Diana had just died on the operating table, she was as shocked as he was — and terrified for him,” Junor explains of Camilla’s reaction.
“Charles knew immediately what the public reaction would be: they would blame him.”
Devastated by his ex-wife’s death – despite years of tension Charles was still said to love the mother of his children – the prince would often go for long walks and cry “copiously”.
Despite Camilla’s constant support for Prince Charles, the Queen – who had made her feelings about the divorcee clear before Diana’s death – reinforced her belief that Camilla was to blame for all the scandal that had plagued the royal family.
The Queen had wanted Camilla gone before Diana’s death, and felt no differently after it, reports Junor Her private secretary, Sir Robert Fellowes — who was also Diana’s brother- in-law — strongly reinforced her view.
“The Queen’s stance was one of monarch, not mother, and therein lay the problem.
“Her son badly needed support and this woman had given it to him.”
