‘I draw strength from unsung heroes’

Queen Elizabeth II has paid tribute to inspiring people and unsung heroes in her annual Christmas Day broadcast to the Commonwealth.

‘I often draw strength from meeting ordinary people doing extraordinary things: volunteers, carers, community organisers and good neighbours; unsung heroes whose quiet dedication makes them special,’ the 90-year-old monarch said ina prerecorded message.

‘They are an inspiration to those who know them, and their lives frequently embody a truth expressed by Mother Teresa.

She once said: “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love”.’

Every year, the Queen’s message is broadcast at 3pm on Christmas Day and shown in all Commonwealth countries – it is seen as a rare occasion when she can speak from the heart without having to consult government ministers.

As well as being written by Elizabeth, it often draws on her own experiences over the past year.
